Benefits of Magnesium

Clinical Trial Results

In a Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) registered clinical trial (ACTRN 12609000863235) at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, Australia, it was found that magnesium in drinking water significantly increased plasma magnesium concentrations. In the clinical trial, the drinking water contained 120 mg magnesium per litre.

Research has shown that magnesium inside body cells is correlated strongly to plasma (extracellular) magnesium concentrations in a dose-dependent manner. That is, the more magnesium outside a cell in the body, the more magnesium is inside the cell. Magnesium inside body cells is essential for anti-viral, and anti-tumour immunity. See the world’s leading scientific journal Science (2013).

Magnesium inside body cells is essential also for the function of cell mitochondria – the energy producing power-houses of body cells. Mitochondria occupy about 30 per cent of the cell volume in organs with high energy requirements such as the heart, brain and muscles. The magnesium concentration of mitochondria is about five-fold higher than the rest of the cell. Magnesium deficiency induces mitochondrial dysfunction which decreases cell energy production. See the publication Antioxidants (2020).

The above information may explain the increase in lifespan of humans and animals that consume magnesium in drinking water.

Because magnesium is essential for energy production in the body, magnesium in drinking water makes an ideal healthy ‘energy drink’ for athletes and people engaged in intense physical activity.

Magna Aqua is a soluble bioavailable form of magnesium that is readily absorbed into the body. Magna Aqua is fast to act. Other forms of magnesium, particularly magnesium in modern food and in supplement powders, tablets and capsules, are considered not to have these qualities.

Magnesium deficiency and US government publication for health professionals

Are you magnesium deficient? It is known from published health surveys that many people consume less than the recommended amounts of magnesium. It is known also that only about 30 per cent of dietary magnesium is absorbed into the body and that magnesium is lost from the body with the consumption of alcohol.

Magnesium is essential for all energy production in the body especially for energy in heart, brain and muscle. For an excellent description of the body’s need for magnesium, view the US National Institutes of Health publication, ‘Magnesium Fact Sheet for Health Professionals’.

Magnesium deficiency has been known for decades to be associated with inflammation. Decreased magnesium levels result in activation of inflammation, while elevated magnesium levels suppress the inflammatory response. For an excellent review on increasing magnesium dietary intake to reduce the risk of all-cause mortality, see the publication Antioxidants (2020).

It appears that appropriately high magnesium concentrations in the body have far-reaching implications relevant to dampening a wide range of inflammatory-mediated diseases, including the development of interventions inhibiting serious inflammation while leaving the immune system capable of responding appropriately. See the publication J Immunol (2012).

It is known with Corona virus infections, particularly in COVID-19, that the real danger is not from the virus per se but from uncontrolled inflammatory over-reaction of the body’s immune system. This inflammatory overreaction of the immune system is manifested by what is known as a ‘cytokine storm’ where a flood of inflammatory chemicals (cytokines) produce inflammation of the heart, blood vessels and lungs. In conjunction definitely with vaccination, is it worth trying soluble bioavailable magnesium in drinking water to dampen the inflammation associated with COVID-19?

Other forms of magnesium, particularly magnesium in modern food and in supplement powders, tablets and capsules, are considered not to have these qualities. Magnesium: Energy production in mitochondria and vital magnesium functions endorsed by governments

Magnesium is essential for energy production in the body, especially energy for heart, brain and muscle. Magnesium is vital to protect the negative charges on the cell energy molecule (adenosine triphosphate – ATP) from complexing with inappropriate entities and molecules in body cells. Magnesium is vital for the function of cell mitochondria. Cell mitochondria are the energy producing ‘powerhouses’ of body cells – particularly heart, brain and muscle cells.

As endorsed by either European or USA or Australian and New Zealand governments, the vital functions of magnesium in the body include:

    • Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Magnesium is absolutely essential for normal energy production.
    • Magnesium is vital to nerve conduction, muscle contraction and normal heart rhythym.
    • Magnesium contributes to the structure and development of bone and teeth. Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function.
    • Magnesium is essential for normal cell division and normal body growth and development.
    • Magnesium is essential for the synthesis of proteins, DNA, RNA and the major body anti-oxidant called glutathione.
    • Magnesium is an essential co-factor in more than 300 cell enzyme systems that regulate protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control and blood pressure regulation.

Increased lifespan and the environment

Ageing is the largest risk factor for a plethora of medical conditions – from heart failure, stroke, cancer and dementia, to inflammatory and infectious diseases. Billions of US dollars have been invested by biotechnology companies and pharmaceutical companies searching for specific genes and therapeutic products in order to delay ageing and disease.

However, high level professional human genetic and longevity research, including that published in the prominent journal Genetics (November 2018) involving 54 million family trees and over 400 million individuals derived from six billion relatives and ancestors apportions the majority of human health and longevity to external environmental factors (including lifestyle factors). The role of genes (heritability) is diminished to less than 10 per cent. It is the environment that accounts mainly for longevity.

In Australia, extensive longevity in domestic animals has been confirmed by prominent veterinary, environmental and academic scientists as being associated certainly with the environment, particularly the consumption of magnesium in drinking water. Of course, it is well known that mammals, birds and other animals associated with the ocean as their environment live extraordinarily long times. An albatross remains fertile and lives 70 or more years, Bowhead whales live over 200 years, and many fish and sharks live many hundreds of years. With the exception of predation, the jellyfish Turitopsis dorlurnis doesn’t die at all. The water in the ocean contains high concentrations of magnesium; about 1,300 mg magnesium per litre.

Magna Aqua is a soluble bioavailable form of magnesium that is readily absorbed into the body. Magna Aqua is fast to act. Other forms of magnesium, particularly magnesium in modern food and in supplement powders, tablets and capsules, are considered not to have these qualities.

Increase in lifespan in humans and domestic animals

There are places in the world where domestic animals have been identified to live up to 30 per cent longer than the average for the species. This occurs particularly in the Monaro region of southern New South Wales, Australia. The extreme longevity has been confirmed by prominent Australian veterinary, environmental and academic scientists. The long-lived domestic animals, without exception, consume drinking water that contains high concentrations of magnesium – up to 120 mg magnesium per litre of drinking water. The magnesium derives from water in volcanic basalt springs.

An article on these long-lived domestic animals from 2002 by former prominent Sydney Morning Herald columnist Peter Bowers states:

“The whole distribution of age and performance has been skewed towards old age and doing well… 16, 18, 23-year-old cows, all doing well; 16-year-old sheep; a 40-year-old horse. Marvellous”.

In addition, a high level US Government report titled ‘Aging and the Geochemical Environment’ describes increased longevity (low death rate) in people in the USA associated with the consumption of drinking water containing high concentrations of magnesium – at least 30 mg magnesium per litre. Many of the drinking waters associated with longevity contained much higher magnesium concentrations.

Because magnesium is essential for energy production in the body, magnesium in drinking water makes an ideal healthy ‘energy drink’ for athletes and people engaged in intense physical activity.
